Kashmir Floods Response (2014)

When the Valley Was Under Water

When the Valley Was Under Water

One of the most devastating floods in Jammu & Kashmir's modern history

In September 2014, Jammu & Kashmir witnessed one of the most devastating floods in its modern history. Entire neighbourhoods were submerged, homes and livelihoods were destroyed, and normal life came to a standstill. Government estimates later placed losses at over ₹1 trillion, with 250,000 homes damaged or destroyed, thousands of kilometres of roads washed away, and over 200 lives lost.

Hospitals, government offices, and emergency services were themselves under water, leaving communities largely to fend for themselves.

BWF's Response

Recognising the scale and urgency of the situation, BWF expanded its work in Kashmir from immediate relief towards medical assistance and early rehabilitation. After rapid field assessments across North, Central, and South Kashmir, BWF focused its response in some of the most severely affected areas: Bandipora, Beerwah, Pattan, Baramulla, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, and Kupwara with Beerwah serving as the coordination hub.

At a time when medical systems were overwhelmed, we mobilised 120+ volunteer doctors from Maharashtra, bringing medical care directly to flood-hit communities. Mobile medical camps were organised to treat illnesses, prevent outbreaks, and provide essential medicines.

Restoring Livelihoods

Carpet Weaving Looms

As the emergency phase stabilised, BWF also addressed livelihood losses, particularly among carpet-weaving families whose looms—their sole source of income—had been destroyed by floodwaters. In response to this, we decided to provide entirely new looms to the affected families, which meant giving them a ray of hope to sustain their lives.

In this regard, BWF provided 41 Carpet Weaving Looms to the affected families in District Baramulla, Bandipora and Budgam.

Impact

  • Restored income source for 41 families
  • Preserved traditional craft skills
  • Long-term livelihood sustainability
